At this time there are slightly more than two million women living in the United States who have been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer. It is the leading cancer site among American women and is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40-59. It is projected that within the United States during the 2006 year, an estimated 212,920 new cases of invasive breast cancer will occur in women and 1,720 new cases in men. It is also estimated that 40,970 women and 460 men will die of breast cancer during 2006. At the present time, scientists believe that breast cancer is caused by a combination of both known and unknown factors, lifestyle choices and reproductive factors.
